Erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs: How often should you take them?

ED medicines like sildenafil (Viagra®), tadalafil (Cialis®), and vardenafil (Levitra®) are usually taken thirty minutes to an hour before engaging in sexual activity. This means that ED drugs are taken on an as-needed basis instead of daily, as with most other prescription medicines for chronic health conditions.

Many men will be using such ED drugs every other day. This could be less or more frequent depending on how often the patient engages in sex.

However, for some men, there might be more than one opportunity to engage in sexual activity within a day. We can only hope to be like them.

But in all seriousness, sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil (including their branded versions) all suggest a maximum use of strictly once daily on their labels. For instance, the manufacturers of Viagra® (sildenafil) clearly outline on the label that the maximum dosing frequency is once a day.

The exception to the rule is Cialis® Daily. Cialis® Daily, as the name implies, is a lower dose of tadalafil (also available in generic format) designed to keep you ready for action anytime, anywhere, and in any circumstance by taking this type of daily tadalafil. Some men find taking this type of ED drug a very effective way to treat their symptoms. If you find that daily Cialis® or tadalafil is a better fit for your sex life, consult your healthcare provider about it.

How fast do ED drugs kick in?

Sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil are all designed to work fast.

For instance, sildenafil or Viagra® takes about thirty minutes to an hour before its effects begin to materialize. However, that time frame can be longer if you’ve just eaten a heavy, high-fat meal before taking sildenafil or Viagra®. Moreover, factors such as overall health and metabolism can also play a role in shortening or extending that period of time.

On the other hand, tadalafil or Cialis® is acknowledged for having a longer window of effect than sildenafil or Viagra®. Men who prefer spontaneity in their intimate moments may find this quality of tadalafil/Cialis® better. Better still, tadalafil’s effects aren’t slowed down even when taking it on a full stomach (unlike sildenafil). Expect very little delays even when taking tadalafil after a heavy meal.

Lastly, it’s worth remembering that these ED drugs, although tested and proven for safety and efficacy, still require a degree of sexual stimulation and arousal for them to work at their best. Some guys might need to give their medicine more opportunities to build up its effects. If you’ve just started out on your ED journey, give your ED drugs chances to work, try different times, and consult your healthcare provider if you feel a change in dosage or medicine is necessary.
